BUT- you have to TRY, and ACT, and continue trying, and show up for your communities, and MAKE community and groups and include your local church and hospitals and charity and homeless shelter and universities and libraries!!! be there for people so they know what community is and can be.

join causes that aren't your own, go to protests, show that you care about the collective!!! be kind and open from the start, most people don't know how to help or join causes and it overwhelms them. show that anyone can join your protests and activist groups so that people JOIN.

the most disturbing trend in online leftism is outright hostility towards any kind of community building tools and forgiveness whatsoever.

There’s a scientific journal called “Get me off Your Fucking Mailing List”.

In 2005, computer scientists David Mazières and Eddie Kohler created this highly profane ten-page paper as a joke, to send in replying to unwanted conference invitations. It literally just contains that seven-word phrase over and over, along with a nice flow chart and scatter-plot graph.

An Australian computer scientist named Peter Vamplew sent it to the International Journal of Advanced Computer Technology in response to spam from the journal. Apparently, he thought the editors might simply open and read it.

Instead, they automatically accepted the paper — with an anonymous reviewer rating it as “excellent” — and requested a fee of $150. While this incident is pretty hilarious, it’s a sign of a bigger problem in science publishing. This journal is one of many online-only, for-profit operations that take advantage of inexperienced researchers under pressure to publish their work in any outlet that seems superficially legitimate.

i need everyone to know that community is what will save us all in every single way imaginable. you forming a bond with your neighbour or coworker might help them move house or feel less alone or have the courage to leave an unhealthy living environment. you helping a stranger might provide them with hope. in turn, being able to lean on your community in times of need will save you. your broader bonds with your community are the revolution we need. our society seeks to divide and separate us in so many ways but we are all so much more united in our struggles and joys than you are made to believe. we need to hold onto each other very tightly.

I think one of the easiest tropes to employ here is that Best Friends often want each other's romantic pursuits to go well. So have A be Shipper On Deck for B/C, egging B on about C until they're together. Conspiring with C on how to make B happy, etc.

Personal example: I've been ha-ha-no-really called my life partner's "Instruction Manual", this being cited as a major benefit of polyamory. This doesn't actually require the other partner be lovers. It just requires the people we dearly love to also interact with each other.

Another example: My sister's soulmate, M, is an unequivocally gay man. They aren't romantically tied, much less sexually. But they just get each other in ways even their respective partners don't. So they're there for each other for major life stuff. M wrote music for her wedding, for example. Those of us who are close to my sister all know M is basically family to her, and prioritize him in our own expectations.

How can I write a "soulmates" level platonic relationship? There's a canon couple, A/B, that I love, but I have an idea that will focus on B/C instead. I've noticed that B/C fics will tend to, at best, ignore A and how important A is to B. But, even though A and B won't be romantically involved in this fic, I still want to acknowledge their "soulmates" vibe and write them accordingly. And I have other ideas that are A/B/C, so for this specific one, the answer isn't to have them be poly (even though I love that as well!). So, while B/C will be the focus, I want to also acknowledge A and B's friendship, because even if they're not romantically involved like in canon, I feel like they would continue to be important to each other. What advice do you have for this?

I think you could approach it in a similar way to how it happens in real life.

Have B talk about A to C during casual conversation. Have A call or text B sometimes, maybe with a bit of plot progression or character development, maybe just with a beat of comic interlude.

Have C ask about how A is doing or check in to see if A wants to come over for dinner or join B and C for a movie.

Have occasional scenes where A and B are hanging out together. In those scenes, B could talk about C or A could ask how things are going, but you could also just have the two of them chilling out and not thinking about C at all.

Lots of people have a best friend who is separate from their romantic partner, and they maintain that friendship by making time for it. You can show B's love and affection for A by making time for A in the fic.
